Eurocamp Superior Tent Review (Safari Tent): Our Stay at Les Fontaines

The Superior tent (what Eurocamp used to call the safari tent) is the top of Eurocamp’s tent range: proper canvas camping, without the hassle of bringing and putting up your own. We tried one for two nights at Les Fontaines on Lake Annecy, and we’d book one again over a basic mobile home.

Eurocamp Superior tent (safari tent)

Glamping tent with wooden decking and railings at Les Fontaines campsite, Annecy

We stayed in ours in June at Les Fontaines, on our road trip down to Italy. Eurocamp called it an eco-lodge tent when we booked. Safari and Lodge tents are now sold as Superior (or Superior Plus if you need a third bedroom), so if you’re looking for a safari tent on the Eurocamp site today, that’s the one you want. Our Eurocamp accommodation guide explains all the new names.

It was bigger than we expected and had every home comfort we needed. It was spotless when we arrived, and it had what I think is the best view on the whole site.

Pros of the Superior tent

  • Proper camping feel, closer to the outside than a mobile home
  • Bigger than we expected, with two bedrooms
  • Comfy beds, off the floor
  • Full sized fridge freezer and a well kitted out kitchen
  • Warm at night
  • Furniture in good condition and spotless on arrival
  • Listening to the rain on the canvas

Cons of the Superior tent

  • Ours had no bathroom, so it was a walk to the shower block
  • Wifi was hit or miss inside the tent
  • Dogs aren’t allowed in any Eurocamp tent

Tour of the Superior tent

Outside and the view

The deck was where we spent our evenings. Les Fontaines was very quiet at night in June, which we didn’t mind, and it was lovely to sit on our deck with a glass of wine and that view. Our 5 year old made friends with a German boy at the pool, and the two of them spent days chasing in and out of each other’s tents and even toasted marshmallows together on the bbq.

Bedrooms

Ours had two bedrooms, and the beds were comfy. We took our own linen for a two night stay rather than paying for Eurocamp’s packs. Canvas can get chilly, but ours kept the heat in nicely at night.

Kitchen and living space

Like every Eurocamp tent, it came already set up with a kitchen with a gas hob, lights and sockets, and outdoor furniture. Ours also had a full sized fridge freezer, which you don’t always get in a tent. The furniture was in good condition and we couldn’t have asked for more.

When a thunderstorm rolled in off the lake on our second afternoon, we stayed inside listening to the rain on the canvas and playing Dobble. We always enjoy that on a tent holiday.

Bathroom and shower blocks

Ours didn’t have its own bathroom, so we used the shower blocks nearest to us. Some Superior tents do come with their own shower and toilet, so check the listing for the parc you’re booking if that matters to you.

The blocks were kept very clean, and I often saw the cleaning staff making rounds. We loved the family shower room: a big cubicle with a normal shower plus a hip-height shower head for children, so I could shower our toddler without juggling in a tight space. Two tips: bring your own toilet roll, and watch the floors, which get slippy when wet.

Wifi

Wifi is free across Les Fontaines, but even though our tent was near the bar and reception, the connection inside it was hit or miss. The best signal was at the bar.

Superior tent features

  • Two bedrooms, sleeping 4 to 5 (Superior Plus has three bedrooms and sleeps 6)
  • Real beds, not airbeds
  • Kitchen with a gas hob, plus a fridge (ours was a full sized fridge freezer)
  • Lights and sockets
  • Wooden floor and a deck with outdoor furniture
  • Some have their own shower room and toilet, and some have air conditioning, depending on the parc

Would we book a Superior tent again?

Yes. I’d book one over a basic mobile home every time, because sleeping under canvas is part of the adventure. If I wanted a proper luxury holiday, though, I’d choose a high end mobile home instead. It suits most ages, from toddlers to older kids, and if yours are teenagers our best Eurocamps for teenagers guide picks the parcs to go for.

Superior tent vs mobile home vs Authentic tent

Eurocamp’s mobile homes (Classic, Comfort, Premium, Ultimate and Ultimate Plus) give you your own bathroom, solid walls and more space, and since 2026 they all take dogs. The Authentic tent (the old Classic and Explorer tents) is the simpler, cheaper option, and we’ve stayed in one of those too: see our Eurocamp Classic tent review. The Superior sits in between, with more room and comfort than an Authentic and more of a camping feel than a mobile home. Our Eurocamp accommodation guide compares them all side by side, and has a table of the campsites that sell each tent.

FAQ

Do Eurocamp still do safari tents?

Yes, but they’re now called Superior tents (Superior Plus for the three bedroom version). Eco-lodge and safari tent were older names for the same thing.

Does a Eurocamp Superior tent have its own bathroom?

Some do, depending on the parc. Ours at Les Fontaines didn’t, so check the listing before you book.

Can you take a dog in a Eurocamp tent?

No. Dogs aren’t allowed in any Eurocamp tent, but they are allowed in all Eurocamp mobile homes. Our dog friendly Eurocamps in France guide has the parcs we’d pick.

I’ve been a camping fanatic since a young age. Growing up in the New Forest meant regular camping trips with friends and family to a range of different campsites. In my early twenties I worked on a host of family focused campsites in Spain, Italy and France. Now that we're starting our own family, camping has become an even bigger focus in my life.
