Thinking about skipping the long drive this year and flying straight to your holiday destination? Or maybe hopping on a ferry as a foot passenger? Good news—you don’t need a car to enjoy an amazing camping holiday in France!
We’ve rounded up some of the best campsites near airports and ferry ports that are perfect for a stress-free, car-free adventure. Whether you’re staying with Eurocamp, Yelloh! Village, Sandaya, or another holiday provider, these locations offer easy access to beaches, towns, and local transport, so you won’t feel stranded.
I’m going to split this review into a few easy to follow sections:
- Campsites within walking distance to a town or beach
- Campsites With public transport to cities and attractions
- and lastly, Campsites with easy travel transfer but restricted to campsite once there
How to Find the Best Flight Routes to Your Campsite

Before booking, make sure your local airport has flights to the nearest airport in France. There’s no point picking a campsite near Bordeaux if your only flight option means a six-hour drive in the UK just to get to the airport!
📌 Pro Tip: Use Skyscanner to check flights from your local airport. Just enter your departure city and select “France” as the destination to see all available options.

La Chapelle – Walk to the Beach & Town in Argeles-sur-Mer

This campsite is located in the lovely seaside town of Argeles Sur Mer. It’s just a short walk out the campsite gates, and you’re in the town and at the beach. The campsite boasts a lovely heated pool area with luxury cabanas, slides, and a child’s splash pool, which our kids loved.
Argeles-sur-Mer is one of the most vibrant towns along this side of the Mediterranean coast. It has a massive selection of restaurants, bars, and shops. Our children loved the variety of ice cream flavours available from the various ice cream stands around the town.
The public transport options are excellent. Regular busses connect the campsite to cities like Perpignan and the beautiful town of Collioure. There are also some great cycle paths along the coastline, and bike hire is available in Argeles-sur-mer.

Le Soleil De La Méditerranée – Luxury Waterpark & Beach Access

This campsite is mega. Le Soleil De La Méditerranée is a large, high-end, luxury, family-friendly resort offering insane facilities like the incredible waterpark with slides. There’s also a kids’ club, entertainment, and plenty of activities for all ages. This campsite is located very close to near Saint Cyprien Plage, so if you’re looking for a livelier campsite but a laid-back area, this is it.
The campsite is just a short walk from the beach and town, where you’ll find shops, markets, bars, and restaurants.
Local bus routes to Perpignan and surrounding areas are also available. The campsite’s proximity to essential services and leisure activities makes it a great choice for a car-free holiday.
La Sirene – One of the Best Eurocamps in France

La Sirene is one of the most popular campsites in the Argeles-sur-Mer area, thanks to its stunning tropical pool area. It’s a very well-known Eurocamp destination, and the waterpark provides holidaymakers with waterslides, lazy rivers, and multiple pools to keep every member of the family happy. But that isn’t it. The campsite also offers holidaymakers luxurious mobile homes, a massive entertainment program, sports facilities, and play areas.
Like La Chapelle, this campsite is within walking distance (40 minutes) of Argeles Sur Mer, with its wide range of shops, bars, restaurants, and beautiful sandy beaches. However, La Marende plage is much closer, at just 25 minutes away, if you just want to visit the beach.
Public transport is readily available, with trains and buses to Perpignan and other nearby towns. The town’s bike-friendly infrastructure allows visitors to explore the area easily without needing a car.

Domaine de la Yole – Family Fun Near Valras-Plage

Domaine de la Yole is a lively, family-friendly campsite located in Valras Plage. This campsite offers guests a boatload of facilities, from the top-notch pool area to the extensive sporting facilities and numerous eateries on-site. We stayed with a young child and a baby who absolutely loved the kids’ splash areas.
The town of Valras Plage is walkable, and our 3-year-old managed to walk there and back easily, but she is a very good walker. Less-abled people may want to take the bus, which stops very close to the campsite, or the land train. Valras Plage has a wide range of restaurants, ice cream parlours, and shops, as well as a beautiful sandy beach.
The public transport options from Valras are great. Regular buses to Beziers connect you to the broader Mediterranean coast cities of Montpellier and Carcassonne. The area is also flat, so cycling between the campsite and town is a great option.

Club Farret – 5-Star Camping Near Vias Plage

I am desperate to try this campsite. Club Farret is a luxury 5-star campsite in Vias Plage, just a short walk from the town centre and beach. There are multiple pools and even some mobile homes with pools outside. There is a pirate splash area and an incredible-looking spa. This campsite is a massive hit with families looking to ditch their cars and fly to their destination on the south coast of France. It’s very popular with English and Irish Eurocampers.
Vias Plage is a much smaller resort than Valras Plage, but the cute seaside town still provides supermarkets, bakeries, numerous restaurants, and a lovely sandy beach. The city of Beziers, with the Canal du Midi and its remarkable locks, is just 10km away and easily reachable via taxi. There is also a train station in Vias, connecting it to Beziers, Montpellier, and beyond.

Best Campsites Near Biarritz Airport
Fly From: Edinburgh, London, Dublin
Le Ruisseau – 5 Camping Near Biarritz & Surf Beaches

It is a fantastic 5* campsite in one of our favourite areas of France. Located in Bidart, a charming French-Basque town, this campsite is just a short distance from the city of Biarritz, famed for its incredible surf. Le Ruisseau offers guests a fantastic pool area, which we loved, especially with its crazy, scary drop slide, which goes super fast, and, of course, the family favourite, the space bowl slide. There’s also a tree-top climbing area, a fishing lake, sports courts, and a spa pool.
Bidart itself is a gorgeous town with stunning panoramic views. There’s a massive surf culture here, and the beach is easily walkable from the campsite. We loved Uhabia Beach and the atmosphere here. The area is great for exploring on foot or by bike but be prepared for some steep hills. Outside the campsite, there is a frequent bus service that takes guests to Biarritz, where you can connect to other towns like Saint-Jean-de-luz and Bayonne and even head into Spain. Biarritz airport is around 10 minutes away, so it’s a short, cheap taxi ride, making transfers manageable and stress-free.

Le Vieux Port – Huge Waterpark & Direct Beach Access

Le Vieux Port is a massive family campsite in Messanges with direct beach access. The site has one of the largest waterparks in France, with seven different pools, wave machines, slides, and even a surf simulator. But the pools aren’t the only attraction here. The campsite also offers a horse riding school, lots of entertainment, numerous eateries, and some great play areas. It’s the perfect destination for active families.
While Messanges is a very small town, the nearby town of Vieux Boucau is easily reachable from the campsite on foot or by bike. We hired bikes to make our stay easier, and the area is famed for its amazing bike trails.
Public transport is available from Vieux Boucau. However, you may never want to leave as the beach, lakes, and town are so nice on their own. The nearest airport is Biarritz, which you must reach by taxi/transfer.

Camping Village Oyam – Family-Friendly Stay in Bidart

Camping Village Oyam is another fantastic campsite in Bidart, offering more pools, luxury mobile homes, camping emplacements, kids’ clubs, and more. Like Le Ruisseau, the campsite is very accessible, and we actually walked to it from Le Ruisseau when we stayed there.
The local beach is perfect for swimming, body-boarding, surfing, and relaxing, and the views of the Atlantic are insane.
For transport, regular bus services connect Bidart to Biarritz, Bayonne, and Hendaye, making it easy to explore the Basque region without a car. Biarritz airport is less than 10 km away, with quick and convenient taxi services available.

Campsites Near Caen/Ouistreham ferry port for foot passengers

Sail from Portsmouth
La Vallee – Close To Town and Beach

La Vallee is a well-equipped 4* family-friendly campsite in Houlgate. We love this campsite for its pools, parks, and family-friendly activities. We also love how close it is to the town centre of Houlgate.
Houlgate is a picturesque coastal town in Normandy. It has a long sandy beach, charming cafes and restaurants, gift shops, markets and stunning architecture.
Taxis are available for those arriving via the Ouistreham ferry port for a 35-minute journey to Houlgate. Public transport options are limited, so booking a transfer in advance is recommended. Once at the campsite, Houlgate is within walking distance.
However, this campsite is not for you if you want to explore further afield without a car on your holiday. There aren’t many transport options if you don’t book taxis and whilst there is a train station in Houlgate, trains are infrequent.
Riva Bella – Walking Distance From the Port

Riva Bella is one of the best-located campsites for foot passengers. It’s within walking distance of the Ouistreham ferry terminal, just 1km away! The campsite is perfect for families looking for a natural escape with direct access to Ouistreham’s sandy beach.
The local area offers seafood restaurants, historical sites like Sword Beach, and a lovely promenade. The town of Ouistreham has shops and cafes, which make getting food easy and convenient.
Public transport is available, with buses running into the city of Caen, which has extensive food and shopping options. You can also rent a bike to explore the scenic bike paths locally.

Le Village Corsaire is a unique pirate-themed campsite situated in Châtelaillon-Plage, a charming seaside town just south of La Rochelle. This campsite offers a lovely, large pool area as well as Eurocamp mobile homes, camping emplacements, and more. La Village Corsaire is very popular with young families thanks to its entertainment, kids’ clubs, shows, and parks.
Châtelaillon-Plage is known for its wide sandy beach, vibrant beachfront promenade, and bustling markets. The town has a good selection of restaurants, boulangeries, and shops, all of which are walkable. The beautiful town of La Rochelle is a short distance away.

Best Campsite Near Paris CDG or Beauvais

Fly from Dublin, Shannon, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Glasgow, London, Bristol, Belfast, Edinburgh and Newcastle to CDG
Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Belfast, Edinburgh, Cork and Dublin to Beauvais
La Croix Du Vieux Pont

You can access this campsite without a car, but it is preferable to have one. Without a car, you will be restricted to the local village and campsite unless you are willing to pay for a taxi to Disney or further afield. That being said, tons of people every year travel here without a car and manage just fine.
LCDVP is a massive, family-friendly resort with a wide range of Eurocamp mobile homes, lodges, and more. We have stayed here quite a few times, the first time being in 1998. The campsite has a ton of facilities, probably more than I have ever seen on a campsite. There are kayaks, pedalos, laser tag, archery, climbing, soft play, pools with waterslides, and so much more. There’s a variety of dining options on the campsite and a few restaurants within walking distance.
Berny-Rivière is a small, picturesque village that provides a peaceful contrast to Paris’s bustling city life. While it does not have an extensive selection of shops, a small supermarket, bakery, and a few local restaurants are nearby.
Despite its rural setting, La Croix Du Vieux Pont is a great base for holidaymakers wishing to turn their Disney or Paris trips into memorable family holidays. Taxi services are available from Le Petite Voyager for a good price. The taxi can assist in day trips, supermarket trips, and airport runs to Charles de Gaulle or Beauvais airports.

Le Chatelet is one of Eurocamp’s most scenic campsites in France. This family-friendly site is perched on the stunning cliffs of Saint-Cast, offering breathtaking views over the Emerald Coast. The 5* campsite offers guests a heated pool area as well as access to two stunning sandy beaches. The peaceful setting is perfect for families wishing to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life, ditching the car for peace and serenity.
Saint-Cast-le-Guildo is a charming town with a picturesque marina, a selection of restaurants, and a weekly market offering fresh local produce. The coastline is great for families who enjoy walking, making it a great destination for families who don’t want to take a car.
For transport, Saint-Malo is approximately a 45-minute drive away, and taxi services are available from the ferry terminal. Public transport options include local buses to Dinard and Saint-Malo, and a seasonal ferry service connects Saint-Cast to other coastal destinations, providing a unique way to explore Brittany car-free.

Le Palavas – Beachfront Camping Near Montpellier

Le Palavas is a seaside campsite in Palavas-Les-Flots, a cute seaside town just outside Montpellier. This area holds a high place in my heart as it’s where we lived when we first moved to France. The campsite has a heated pool, direct beach access and evening entertainment. It’s an excellent resort for families looking for a beach holiday near a vibrant French city.
In the town of Palavas, there are many seaside restaurants, a marina, supermarkets, and cafes. Public transport links make it excellent for getting into the city centre to explore the historical sites of Montpellier. Montpellier airport is nearby and can be accessed via taxi or a shuttle bus to the town centre, where you’ll find buses leading to Palavas (though, with luggage, I’d advise the taxi).

Oasis Palavasienne – Family-Friendly Stay on the City Outskirts

Oasis Palavasienne is another campsite near Montpellier city centre. This family-friendly campsite has swimming pools, slides, entertainment, and more.
The campsite is located in the small town of Lattes which has a tram stop from the city centre. In Lattes, you’ll find a small selection of shops and cafes, so it’s advisable to travel into the city for a wider range of amenities. In the high season, the campsite has a bus travelling to the beach at Palavas, making it easier for holidaymakers without a car. For transport, buses and trams run regularly from Lattes to Montpellier, where visitors can take advantage of the trams, trains, and direct airport connections. The Montpellier train station provides easy access to other major French cities.

Best Campsites Near Nice Airport

La Baume – The Ultimate French Riviera Campsite

This campsite is the reason this blog exists. My husband and I met here back in 2014. La Baume is a 5* campsite on the beautiful French Riviera. It has multiple pool complexes, kids’ splash parks, play areas, skateparks and even a discotheque. It’s a very lively campsite; some holidaymakers don’t ever actually leave the resort. However, if you want to get off-site, there are options.
Public transport is convenient, with buses connecting La Baume to Fréjus and Saint-Raphaël, where visitors can take trains to Nice, Cannes, Monaco and even Italy. Nice Airport is about an hour away by train or car, making transfers straightforward.
If you want to stay local, the town of Frejus is accessible via the bus and has a lot of history. There are also restaurants, shops, a marina and beaches to explore.

Pomport beach

This tranquil lakeside campsite in the Dordogne is amazing for holidaymakers who enjoy the calmer things in life. Pomport beach offers the opportunity to Fish, canoe, and swim in a gorgeous natural setting.
Public transport is massively limited around rural France, and the Dordogne is no exception. You’ll need to get a taxi/transfer from Bergerac (pre-booked), which is around 30 minutes away. Once on-site, you’ll likely be restricted. However, the campsite has a restaurant, shop, pool, and activities. So, if you’re happy to experience the slower pace of life without a car, this is for you.

Flying to Biarritz
Sylvamar

Sylvamar is a top-tier Yelloh Village campsite near Biarritz. It’s situated in Labenne, where you’ll find approximately two ice cream parlours, a grocery shop and an incredible beach with a few restaurants nearby. It isn’t much so you will be restricted without a car. Public transport in the area is limited, so you’ll have to book a transfer/taxi from Biarritz airport. However, the beach is within walking distance away. If you are a keen cyclist, the bike paths here are also great, so you can explore the field further by bike.
The campsite itself is phenomenal, and there is so much to do. The pools are insane, with incredible waterslides and kids’ splash areas you may not want to leave. I highly recommend the spa pool when the kids are at the kids club, and you can relax.

Sailing To Ouistreham/Caen
Des Ormes

Les Ormes is a luxurious countryside resort and golf course. It is not only a campsite but also has apartments and a hotel. The pool complex here is absolutely one of our favourites, especially on a rainy day. There is so much to do on the campsite: tree-top climbing, pedalos, ziplines, golf, horse riding, etc.
However, after getting your taxi/transfer to the campsite, you’ll basically be staying there as there is no public transport or walkable village in the local area. You’ll need to rely on taxis to take you out and about, of which there will be few, and these will need pre-booking.

What to Pack for a Car-Free Camping Holiday in France
You’ll want a big, sturdy backpack and bags for shopping; suitcases with wheels are always a good option. When we’ve travelled with children under 3, we’ve always brought a foldable pushchair and baby carriers to make our lives easier. You may want to avoid bringing bed linen and pre-book it with Eurocamp in advance. The main essentials are obviously you, your clothes, your swimwear, and your devices. We like to pack some packages, too, just in case.
How to Go Shopping Without a Car While Camping
We have always taken really big backpacks and reusable shopping bags. Depending on the distance between the supermarket and the campsite, we only buy what we can carry back with us. Sometimes we booked a taxi to pick us up from supermarkets, but this can be costly. Often, we just stuck to the campsite shops and had basic meals. If this is your priority, try to book campsites near supermarkets. Also, keep an eye out for local markets, as this is a great way to find fresh, seasonal fruit and vegetables without travelling to a large supermarket.
Pros & Cons of a Car-Free Eurocamp Holiday in France
The Benefits Of Going Car-Free On A Camping Holiday
There are tons of benefits to going car-free to your Eurocamp. Firstly, there are cheap flights, and you avoid long drives and fuel/toll costs. You don’t have to drive on strange roads on the wrong side. It can be less stressful without being cramped in a car for a long period and dealing with ferry crossings. Exploring off the campsite is slower-paced when you walk or cycle to places.
The Negatives of Going Car-Free to a Campsite
With every positive, there will be negatives, like having to rely on public transport schedules and having limited shopping options. You will have less flexibility in your excursion plans and a limited ability to explore remote places.
Expert Tips for an Amazing Car-Free Camping Trip
- Decide what kind of holiday you want. Do you mind staying at a resort, or do you want the option to leave and explore?
- Choose campsites in a destination you want to explore
- Research the transport links and airports in advance
- Make use of the campsite facilities; you’re paying for them, and yoga by the pool is actually kinda fun
- Book transfers in advance; they’ll get booked up really fast
- Check out bike hire prices and where your closest is. Lots of campsites offer this, but not all of them.
- Travel as lightly as possible; if you travel via public transport, you don’t want to deal with 20 suitcases and five children.
- Consider multi-destination stays. Stay near a city first, then move to a countryside campsite so you can enjoy the best of both worlds.
A car-free Eurocamp holiday in France is absolutely doable and can be even more relaxing than a road trip when the right plans are in place.
