Campsite Overview

Lou Pignada is a 5-star campsite in the pine forest at Messanges, on the southern Landes coast. It has a heated water park with a lazy river, an indoor pool, a spa, a proper gym, sports pitches and its own bar and restaurant. It's car-free inside, so the kids can scoot and cycle around safely.
We stayed for three nights in mid September 2026 with our two girls, aged 7 and 4, in a Classic mobile home. It was the fourth campsite of our year. (AD) Our stay was booked for us by The Sun's £9.50 holidays because we were making a reel and some stories for them. This review isn't part of that, and as always it's our honest opinion.
We picked Lou Pignada for one reason: the Quiksilver Festival in Hossegor. We've wanted to go for years, and Hossegor is our favourite place on this coast. It's about an hour by bike from the campsite on the cycle paths, so we used Lou Pignada as our base rather than a place to spend every day. We've stayed in Messanges before at Le Vieux Port, just down the road.
It rained when we arrived, then cleared up into blue skies. It was warm enough for swimsuits and the pool in the day, but we needed jumpers in the evenings. Out of season it was really quiet, mostly retired couples, with only a few families.
This review covers the pools, our mobile home, the gym and spa, the kids club and entertainment, food and drink prices, the shop, cycling to Hossegor and what it's like out of season.

Which Lou Pignada is this review about?

Holding the Lou Pignada mobile home key with its blue beach keyring

This review is about Lou Pignada in Messanges, the 5-star campsite in the Landes with the lazy river, indoor pool and spa. There's a second, smaller Lou Pignada in Ondres, a 4-star campsite with 214 pitches about 32km further south (around 40 minutes by car). They're easy to mix up when you're booking, and our friends actually booked the wrong one last summer, so double check the town before you pay!

Lou Pignada Swimming Pool Complex

Overview of the Lou Pignada water park with pools, a yellow and blue kids' slide and loungers under the pines

Lou Pignada's water park has 5 heated pools, 3 slides, a lazy river, an indoor pool and a balneo area with massage jets, all in the middle of the campsite. Some of it looks newly renovated and some of it looks a bit older, so I think it's been done up in stages. We went every day, and in September we practically had it to ourselves.

You need your wristband from reception to get in. The pools are open 10am to 6pm out of season and 10am to 8pm in July and August, but times change, so check the sign at the gate.

Toddler Pool & Splash Area

Small yellow and green slide tower in the shallow toddler pool at Lou Pignada

There's a toddler pool and a shallow area next to the main lagoon, with a small toddler slide that's perfect for under 4s. There's another, bigger slide and splash area for over 3s near the indoor pool.

Main Swimming Pool

The main lagoon pool at Lou Pignada with a palm tree growing out of the water

The main pool is a lagoon-style pool right in the centre of the water park. It felt quite cold when we swam in it, but in fairness, it was only about 22 degrees outside that day. It looked really clean and had jets in the centre, on a little island with palm trees.

Lazy River

The lazy river and connected pools at Lou Pignada, lined with palm trees and rocks
The lazy river was our favourite bit, with warm water and palm trees all round.

The lazy river was our favourite bit. It's surrounded by palm trees, it looks really luxurious, and you can borrow rings for one or two people to float round on. The water was lovely and warm. The campsite's rules say it's for ages 10 and over who can swim, though nobody stopped us going in with the girls. It did look a little green around the edges. I don't think it was dirty, maybe just a little stained.

Indoor Pool

The heated indoor pool at Lou Pignada with a wooden ceiling and big windows
The heated indoor pool, basic but handy on cooler days.

Lou Pignada's indoor pool is covered, heated and open all season, which is a big plus outside the summer holidays. It was fairly basic and looks like it has been there a long time. The girls enjoyed jumping in and we could do a few lengths.

Waterslides

Blue and yellow waterslides running into a pool at Lou Pignada, with the slide tower behind

There are 3 big slides at Lou Pignada. Two are together near the main pools and one is tucked around the corner.

The two slides together are the main feature. One is a very fast almost vertical slide and the other is a family friendly flume. Our girls loved them both, and I even had a go on the fast one (it's REALLY speedy). I'm pretty sure there were age and height limits, but nobody stopped any of us going on them. I did tell the 4 year old to avoid the fast one though, much to her dismay.

Small fenced splash pool with a red dome at Lou Pignada

She did go on the “tucked away” slide, which is aimed at children aged 3 and up, and you could tell it had been there a long time. The stairs up seemed old and rickety and the slide is SO slow that the girls basically walked off the end of it. That's no bad thing when your little one is still finding their confidence.

Other Pool Areas

The pools at Lou Pignada seen from above, with loungers and the slide tower

Near the slow slide there's a little mushroom splash pool. It's good for littles to play in while older siblings are on the slide, but it really does feel tucked away from the rest of the facilities.

There's another lagoon-style pool joined to the exit of the 2 big slides, with a “jacuzzi” attached. We didn't use it much, as the jacuzzi wasn't very warm. We tended to stick to the indoor pool, the central lagoon and the lazy river.

Pool Facilities & Sunbeds

Rows of sun loungers and parasols beside the pools at Lou Pignada

There are loads of sun loungers and a few parasols, and the whole area was clean, with staff litter picking while we were there. There's a snack bar by the pool, but we didn't see it open once in September. The campsite also has a 200m² rooftop sun deck over the pools.

Lifeguards

Lifeguards were on duty every time we went to the pool, but this could change depending on the time of year and how busy the campsite is.

Swimwear Rules

Mike climbing the slide stairs at Lou Pignada in fitted swim trunks
Mike in his regulation trunks.

Men have to wear tight-fitting lycra trunks or swim boxers, and baggy swim shorts aren't allowed. It's the same rule at most French campsites, and our guide to campsites that allow swim shorts lists the exceptions.

Our Pool Verdict

The warm lazy river is the best feature, and the heated indoor pool is brilliant on cooler days. The big slides are great fun, but the little slide is old and slow, and the fast one is too much for younger children. It isn't the biggest pool complex in the Landes, but it suits all ages. In August, I'd get there when it opens, as friends who've stayed in the school holidays told us it gets extremely busy.

Our Accommodation at Lou Pignada

The outside of our Classic mobile home, B5, at Lou Pignada

We stayed in a Classic two-bedroom mobile home, number B5, booked for us by The Sun £9.50 holidays. We haven't stayed in a Classic for years, and it was much more modern than I expected. The bright pink sofa and rainbow curtains went down VERY well with the girls. Our Eurocamp accommodation guide explains how the Classics compare.

  • Two bedrooms, a double and a twin
  • No air-con, but a heater in the living room
  • A fully covered terrace with chairs and a bench
  • No barbecue
  • No bedding or towels, so bring your own (or book in advance)
  • A cleaning kit, as you clean before you leave

Outside the Accommodation

Our girls at the table on the covered terrace of our mobile home at Lou Pignada

Outside we had a covered terrace with relaxing chairs, a bench the girls climbed all over, outside lights and a little garden area. Ours was shady, so it got chilly sitting out in the evenings (jumpers definitely needed in September).

Inside the Accommodation

The kitchen in our Classic mobile home at Lou Pignada

The kitchen has a fridge freezer, microwave, coffee maker, kettle and an induction hob, plus a TV in the living area. There's no oven and no dishwasher, so it's washing up by hand. What I loved was the storage, which is rare in a mobile home, and there are hooks in every single room for coats and hats.

The girls' twin bedroom in our Classic mobile home at Lou Pignada

The girls' room has two single beds, a wardrobe and one socket, but no heater and no blackout blinds. Our room was more spacious than I'm used to, with a double bed, a wardrobe and storage over the bed, but only one socket and again no blackout blinds. The toilet is separate from the shower room and away from the girls' room, which was handy at night.

The shower was great, with good pressure and temperature… until Mike went last and got a freezing cold one, as the hot water tank is pretty small. There was no hairdryer and no bath mat. To turn the electrics on, you put your key in a slot by the door like a hotel room, which I liked as it shows the campsite trying to be eco-friendly.

No key in the slot, no lights.

What Was Included?

  • Washing up liquid, antibacterial spray, a cloth and a sponge
  • A fridge freezer, microwave, kettle and coffee maker
  • A TV
  • A covered terrace with outdoor furniture
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • A welcome postcard on the table

Pitch Size & Privacy

A path lined with mobile homes close together at Lou Pignada

The mobile homes at Lou Pignada sit close together in rows, which is the thing Mike dislikes most about some mobile home holidays. You can't really see your neighbours, but it does feel a bit regimented. The plots are small too, and that's why you can't park outside. We were near the back, close to the sports pitches and the older kids' play area, but the campsite is small, so nothing was far.

Would We Choose This Accommodation Again?

The Classic was clean, comfortable and fine for a short break. Next time, though, I'd book one of the premium wooden lodges with the giant decking, or one of the treehouse-style tents with a kitchen underneath and the bedroom up high. They looked really cool.

These raised cabins are what I'd book next time.

Playgrounds & Sports Facilities at Lou Pignada

Painted multi-sports court with a basketball hoop surrounded by pine trees at Lou Pignada

Lou Pignada has 2 play areas, a gym and a big sports area at the back with football, basketball, volleyball, pétanque and table tennis. Everything we used was free.

Main Playground

Play park by the bar at Lou Pignada with slides and a volleyball net

The play park by the bar was our girls' favourite. It has slides and see-saw style rockers, and lots of children met up there in the evenings before the mini disco. A park next to a bar is exactly what we like. The first drink is peaceful while the kids play… the second never is.

Older Children's Playground

Turquoise metal climbing frame on sand in the back play area at Lou Pignada

The second play area at the back is older. It has swings and some strange metal climbing frames that look like the Atlaspheres from Gladiators. Honestly, none of us could work out what you're meant to do on them. I'd much rather have a good old wooden play park with slides and swings.

None of us could work out what this one is for…

Football, Basketball & Volleyball

Grass football pitch with goals among the trees at Lou Pignada

The sports area has a grass football pitch, a sand football pitch, a multi-sports court, a basketball court and volleyball. It was very muddy the morning after the rain, so pack old trainers or some wellies.

Table Tennis & Pétanque

There are several table tennis tables and pétanque courts at the back. The animation team ran a pétanque tournament while we were there, which the retired couples on site LOVED.

Gym

The gym at Lou Pignada with treadmills, cross trainers and weights machines

Lou Pignada's gym is one of the best we've seen on a campsite. There are treadmills and cross trainers, a bench with adjustable weights and a pull-up station. The machines include a chest press, a leg press and leg curl and extension machines, plus resistance cables. It's free, air-conditioned and for over 18s only. The sign said 9am to 7pm when we were there, and it's next to the water park.

A real gym, not just a treadmill in a corner.

Rescue Chickens

The rescue chickens at the back of the campsite.

At the back of the campsite there are pens of rescue chickens living under the pine trees. The girls loved going to say hello to them. I'm never really sure of the point, though. Can you pet them? Get eggs? I don't know. I want a mini farm where I can stroke the animals!

Bike Facilities

Our 7 year old riding her bike on the car-free paths at Lou Pignada

The paths around the campsite are tarmac and car-free, so they're great for bikes and scooters. The girls zoomed up and down outside our mobile home while we packed bags, which made getting out of the door SO much easier. Cycle paths start right outside the campsite and link to Messanges, Vieux-Boucau and the rest of the coast.

Paid Activities at Lou Pignada

Spa

Entrance to the Espace Bien-Être spa at Lou Pignada

Lou Pignada's spa has a hammam and sauna for over 16s, and a jacuzzi for ages 8 and up. These were the prices during our stay:

  • One adult: €12 for an hour or €20 for two hours
  • Two adults: €22 for an hour or €40 for two hours
  • Children aged 8 to 15: €7
  • Children's 30-minute massage, ages 8 to 15: €42
  • Adult 20-minute back massage: €42
  • 60-minute full body candle massage: €82
  • 90-minute body scrub and massage: €106

Facials and hair removal are available too. Out of season the spa was open 10am to 1pm and 4pm to 7pm, but closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays. In July and August it's open the same hours every day except Saturday. We didn't use it, so I can't tell you whether it's worth the money.

Arcade

Arcade machines inside the games room at Lou Pignada

The arcade has a motorbike racing game, air hockey, a car racing game, pinball and table football. Out of season it only opened at 6pm on Fridays and Saturdays, so we missed it, but I'd expect it to open much more in summer. There are also a few grab machines by the bar where the girls could win a plastic toy that breaks five minutes later…

Kids Clubs & Entertainment at Lou Pignada

The weekly entertainment programme board at Lou Pignada

Kids Club

Lou Pignada runs a free kids club for ages 4 to 12, plus a teen club for 13 to 17 year olds in July and August. In high season the kids club runs Monday to Friday. To our surprise, it was still running on weekend mornings and Mondays in September. The kids club area is right opposite the bar, so everything is together at the front of the campsite.

The blue Kids Club building at Lou Pignada with a child on a bike outside

Our girls didn't go to kids club, but the team of three who ran it were lovely and great with them. The girls spent ages chasing them round the play park before the mini disco.

Daytime Entertainment

Even out of season there was a programme, with kids club, exercise classes, a dance class at 5pm, a welcome event and the pétanque tournament. In July and August the campsite adds aqua aerobics and pool games.

Mini Disco

Our two girls on the mini disco stage at Lou Pignada
Mini disco time, the highlight of the girls' evening.

The mini disco was at 8pm by the bar, and there was a mascot, which our girls always love. Lots of children played in the park beforehand and then danced together. The girls had a brilliant time and went to sleep really nicely afterwards (a win for us).

Evening Entertainment

A cold beer on the bar terrace at Lou Pignada before the apéro games

Before the mini disco there were apéro games at about 7pm, including quizzes and a blind test music quiz where you guess the song. Most of it was in French, so unless your French is good, you won't be able to join in much. We speak French, but we don't know French TV or music!

One of the songs was from Frozen, and when we shouted out “Frozen”, the presenter had no idea what we meant. It wasn't until I said “La Reine des Neiges” that she understood, and she was really lovely about it. The schedule also listed karaoke at 9pm on the Friday.

How Loud Is the Campsite at Night?

Lou Pignada was very quiet at night in September, and we couldn't hear anything from our mobile home at the back. The campsite says entertainment usually finishes around 11pm in summer. If you want a quieter night, ask for accommodation away from the bar and stage.

Food & Drink at Lou Pignada

Lou Pignada has a restaurant and bar with a separate ice cream counter, plus a pool snack bar. The restaurant and bar are open to the public. We didn't eat in the restaurant, as we ate out in Hossegor and made simple meals in the mobile home, but I took photos of the menus so you know what to expect. The stage is just outside, and although it looks a bit old-fashioned, the bar and restaurant inside have been done up beautifully with plants, mirrors and lovely lighting.

Main Restaurant

Mike sitting in the bar at Lou Pignada under woven pendant lights
Mike approves of the new bar decor.

The restaurant menu is quite basic, with tapas, burgers, salads, pizzas and a few mains, and it's pretty expensive.

  • Smash burger or chicken burger: €17.50
  • Charcuterie board: €20, or €22 with cheese
  • Steak, fries and salad: €25
  • Hake (merlu): about €22
  • Caesar salad: €16.50
  • Kids' meal (drink, sausages and chips or nuggets, and an ice cream): €12
  • Margherita pizza: €10.90
  • Ham and cheese pizza: €12
  • Ham and mushroom pizza: €13
  • Most expensive pizza: about €16

A Margherita at €10.90 is just over my €10 Margherita rule, but 90 cents doesn't put me off too much.

Bar

Bree at a table outside the Lou Pignada bar with two beers
Beers on the bar terrace, much safer than the rosé…

We spent quite a lot of time at the bar while the girls played in the park, and it's a lovely spot, but it's expensive. Out of season it didn't open until 5pm.

  • Stella, 50cl: €7.40
  • Hoegaarden: €9
  • Leffe: €9.60
  • 1.5 litre jug of beer: €20
  • Corona 0%: €6 a bottle
  • Glass of rosé (12cl): €3.50
  • Glass of sangria: €4.50
  • Coffee: €2

A word of warning on the rosé. It was almost bright red and probably the worst rosé I've ever had (I like mine really pale), so I stuck to beer after that.

The rosé. I stuck to beer after this…

Ice Cream & Sweet Treats

The snack and ice cream kiosk on the bar terrace at Lou Pignada

We got ice creams most evenings. There are the usual wrapped ice creams from about €3.50, and a scoop counter with around 12 flavours, including sorbets and gelato. One scoop is €3, two are €5.50 and three are €7.50, and there are waffles and crêpes too.

Campsite Shop at Lou Pignada

Aisles of food and snacks inside the Lou Pignada campsite shop

Lou Pignada's shop is a really good size for a campsite shop, with about five aisles of food, snacks, bread and basics. You could easily grab some emergency items, although I'd still go to a supermarket for a big shop.

Nearest Supermarket

The nearest supermarket is the Carrefour Market in Messanges, about 1km away. The Super U opposite the big campsites on the Route des Lacs closed in 2023, so don't head there. We brought most of our food from home, as it was only a short trip.

Beach Near Lou Pignada

Messanges beach, a short drive from Lou Pignada
  • Distance: 2.5km to Messanges Plage Sud, or about 3km to Vieux-Boucau
  • Walkable: it's a long walk with little ones
  • Cyclable: yes, on the cycle paths
  • Shuttle: free to Messanges Nord in July and August, every day except Saturday
  • Suitable for young children: yes, between the flags, but the Atlantic waves are big

We didn't go to the beach near Lou Pignada this time, as we spent our beach days in Hossegor. But we know Messanges beach well from our stay at Le Vieux Port, which sits right behind it. It's a huge, sandy beach with surf schools and big Atlantic waves, and it's lifeguarded from mid June to mid September.

Vieux-Boucau is the nearest town, and its calm saltwater lake (Port d'Albret) is perfect for little ones who aren't ready for the waves.

Things to Do Near Lou Pignada

Lou Pignada is in the southern Landes, between surf beaches, lakes and pine forest, with Hossegor and the Basque coast to the south. Our things to do in the Landes guide has lots more.

Hossegor

Our daughter on the beach at Hossegor with the waves behind her
Hossegor beach, the girls' favourite part of the trip.

Distance: 18km, about 20 minutes by car or an hour by bike. Hossegor is our favourite place on this coast, with a beautiful beach, amazing sunsets and incredible surf. The beach at Hossegor was the girls' favourite part of the whole trip.

The Quiksilver Festival

Crowds on the beach at Hossegor during the Quiksilver Festival
The Quiksilver Festival in Hossegor, the reason we came.

The Quiksilver Festival runs every September across Hossegor, Capbreton and Seignosse, and in 2026 it was 19 to 27 September. It was epic. Surf, music and that Hossegor buzz… if your dates line up, it's absolutely worth a day. It's the main reason we booked this stay.

Cycling to Hossegor

Cycling on the forest cycle path from Lou Pignada towards Hossegor

Lou Pignada to Hossegor is 18km on cycle paths the whole way, and it took us about an hour each way. Our 7 year old rode her own bike and our 4 year old sat on a child seat on the back of mine. It was much harder than we expected.

Halfway there I realised our 7 year old was pedalling downhill… her brake cable had twisted in the car and was rubbing the whole time. She kept going like a champion and did about 40km that day. We cycled home in the dark with bike lights, which was really scary, and I wouldn't do it again. The next day we drove (and took the scooters, as parking during the festival was tricky).

Messanges Beach

People walking on the wide sandy beach at Messanges

Distance: 2.5km. A big sandy surf beach with surf schools, which we know from our stay at Le Vieux Port.

Vieux-Boucau

Distance: about 3km. A lovely little seaside town with lots of restaurants, a lifeguarded beach and the calm Port d'Albret lake. We've been, and it really comes alive in summer.

Seignosse & Capbreton

Distance: about 15 to 20km. More surf beaches and laid-back seaside towns just around Hossegor. We've reviewed Natureo in Seignosse if you'd rather stay closer to the surf.

Courant d'Huchet

Distance: 16km, about 30 minutes. A protected river winding through the forest to the sea, with guided boat trips.

Atlantic Park

Distance: 14km, about 20 minutes. A water park in Seignosse, if the campsite pools aren't enough.

Check-In & Reception at Lou Pignada

The reception building at Lou Pignada campsite

Check-in at Lou Pignada is from 4pm for mobile homes, and check-out is by 10am. We arrived early and they let us check in straight away, which was fantastic. The receptionist spoke perfect English and was SO friendly. She gave us a map, told us which activities were still running and warned us it was quiet but would get busier at the weekend.

You drive to your accommodation to unload, then park in the car park outside. There's a cleaning check before you leave to get your deposit back. Out of season, reception closes at 6.30pm, or 8.30pm in July and August. If you're arriving later, there's a phone number on the reception door for your keys.

We got so lost on the way to our mobile home, even with the map (I'm terrible at map reading). On the bright side, it was a lovely tour of the campsite…

Practical Facilities at Lou Pignada

Parking

Cars parked under the pine trees in the Lou Pignada car park
All cars live here, not by your mobile home.

You can't park outside your accommodation at Lou Pignada. You drive in to drop your bags, then park in the secure car park across the road, which has barriers and a footbridge straight back into the campsite. We didn't know this at first and came back from the pool to a note on our car. Later, Mike parked in what he thought was a space, and reception rang me four times to ask us to move it…

Once the car was actually in the car park, it didn't bother us at all, and it means the campsite is really safe for kids on bikes and scooters. The footbridge is closed from 10pm to 6am.

Wi-Fi

The Wi-Fi was free for us and connected straight away, with no payment needed. The campsite says whether it's included depends on your booking.

Laundry

Washing machines and tumble dryers in a toilet block at Lou Pignada

There are washing machines and tumble dryers in the toilet blocks. A wash is €6 and a dry is €4, and you pay by card at the machine. Laundry detergent is included in the machines, so there's no need to pack any.

Bike Hire

Mike at the Loue Ton Vélo bike hire hut at Lou Pignada

Bike hire at Lou Pignada is run by Loue Ton Vélo. Out of season it was only open in the mornings. We paid €47 for two adult bikes for the day, with two locks, helmets and a baby seat included. The staff were brilliant, and both people we dealt with spoke English, which made it really easy. Our 7 year old brought her own bike.

Barbecues

Communal barbecue and picnic tables under the pines at Lou Pignada

There are communal barbecues and benches around the campsite, including near the sports pitches and the toilet blocks. Our mobile home didn't come with one.

Pets

The Canidouches dog shower at Lou Pignada
Yes, there's a shower just for dogs.

Dogs are allowed on a lead, and there's even a dog shower in the toilet block. We didn't see many in September, but one did come over to say hello.

Toilets & Shower Blocks

Orange and blue toilet block among the trees at Lou Pignada

The toilet blocks at Lou Pignada are really nice and well kept. There are plenty of showers and sinks, little children's toilets, a baby bath, an accessible toilet and shower, clothes washing sinks and washing up sinks. We used them on walks round the campsite, and with blocks this nice, I'd happily camp here.

Accessibility

Mobile homes along a tarmac path under the trees at Lou Pignada

We saw several adapted mobile homes with ramps, although we didn't go inside one. The campsite says the water park is accessible, with a hoist into the water, and the paths are flat tarmac.

Campsite Grounds, Pitches & Cleanliness

Campsite Layout

Lou Pignada is small, flat and easy to walk around (even if we did get lost on day one). The bar, kids club and entertainment are at the front, the pools are in the middle, and the sports pitches, chickens and older kids' park are at the back. There are camping pitches and resident mobile homes as well as rentals.

Shade & Nature

Looking up at the tall pine trees over Lou Pignada

Lou Pignada is set in the Landes pine forest, with trees, hedges and plants everywhere, which I love on a campsite. I grew up in the New Forest, so being among pine trees and close to the sea always feels a bit nostalgic. We didn't notice any mosquitoes or wasps in September.

Cleanliness & Maintenance

The wooden bar counter at Lou Pignada with woven lights and a coffee machine

Lou Pignada was clean and well kept everywhere we went, from the toilet blocks to the pools. Our mobile home had a few fingerprints, but nothing to complain about.

Is Lou Pignada Good for Families?

Lou Pignada is good for families who want to explore the coast and come back to a quiet, green campsite, especially with children aged 4 to 8.

Babies & Toddlers

There's a toddler pool, a gentle slide, a baby bath in the toilet blocks and car-free paths, and the heated indoor pool helps on cooler days. The lazy river is officially for over 10s, and there are no blackout blinds in the Classic mobile homes.

Children Aged 4 to 8

This is the sweet spot. The park by the bar, the mini disco, kids club and the scooter-friendly paths kept our 4 and 7 year old really happy.

Older Children & Teenagers

Older children have the sports pitches, table tennis, the arcade and a teen club in July and August, plus the lazy river from age 10. Teens into surfing and cycling will love the area, but go in the summer holidays if you want other teenagers around.

Is Lou Pignada Good Value?

Lou Pignada is a lovely campsite, but eating and drinking on site adds up fast, with a pint at €7.40 and a burger at €17.50. Our stay was booked for us, so I can't tell you what we'd have paid. To keep costs down, we packed bread, wraps, rice cakes, peanut butter, boiled eggs and homemade banana bread, and took picnics out on the bikes.

If you want the full experience, with every pool, the teen club, aqua aerobics and the evening shows, go in July or August. In September we loved the peace, but there wasn't much atmosphere.

You can book Lou Pignada mobile homes with Eurocamp, book a pitch or one of the unusual stays directly with the campsite, or find it in package deals like The Sun £9.50 holidays (which is how ours was booked).

What Accommodation Should You Choose?

A Classic mobile home is fine for a short break. For a longer stay, I'd go for one of the premium wooden lodges with the big decking, or a treehouse tent if your kids want something fun. With toilet blocks this nice, I'd happily camp here too.

Which Area Would We Choose?

We were in B5, near the back, which is handy for the sports pitches and the older kids' park but a walk to the bar and mini disco. With young children, I'd ask to be nearer the front, by the bar and the play park. Layouts change, so check when you book.

Our Verdict: Would We Return to Lou Pignada?

Would We Return to Lou Pignada?

“

Probably not for a whole campsite holiday, but I'd happily recommend it to friends heading to the Atlantic coast.
What we loved most was the location. It's a green, quiet campsite under the pines, with a warm lazy river, a brilliant gym and cycle paths from the gate, all an hour's ride from Hossegor. Our weekend at the Quiksilver Festival was epic.
What surprised us was how much was still running in September, with kids club, the mini disco and a music quiz, and how modern our Classic mobile home was.
What disappointed us was the lack of atmosphere out of season, the expensive bar and how close together the mobile homes are.
Next time, I'd book a premium lodge or a treehouse tent… and I definitely wouldn't cycle home in the dark.
The girls want to go back everywhere we go, but their favourite part was the beach at Hossegor, not the campsite.
I'd recommend Lou Pignada to families who want a base for exploring the southern Landes. I wouldn't recommend it if you want to stay on site all holiday, or if you want lots of entertainment in English.
Five nights would be perfect.
